Dell Inspiron 1545 Design Issues

April 24th, 2009 by alex

Real world design is always a trade-off of features vs. budget, but having had a Dell Inspiron 1545 since January, and a Latitude D800 (IIRC) before that, maybe I can shed light on a few trade-offs too far:

1) The power socket should be at the back. If it *must* be on the side, at least let’s have an L-plug that doesn’t effectively add 6cm to what is already a wide footprint.

2) HDD activity light *please*?

3) Docking Bay 94 would be nice. I understand this is probably a significant extra cost though.

4) A little latch on the screen please? Pick the unit up awkwardly by the base and the screen can flip down with gravity.

5) (cough) battery life. Enough said :)

6) The shiny finish. Handprint smears after 30 seconds of use. Maybe shiny on the outside and something a little more utilitarian at the foot of the keyboard and around the touchpad?

7) Speaking of the touchpad; drivers - when will Alps sort them out? The best a Dell tech could do was suggest I re-install the OS.

8 ) USB port(s) on the back pretty please? :)

  • I bought a Dell Inspirion 1545 for my son to take to college and its already had two serious issues, both involving replacing the hard drive. Apparently this third crash involves replacing the memory as well.

Is there something wrong with this model? Or did I just get a lemon?
